John G. Hill (1983 to 1994)
John G. Hill was born in 1943 in Fort Worth, Texas. After graduating from Paschal High School, he matriculated at Baylor University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1966 and his law degree in 1967.
After being admitted to the bar, Hill served as an Assistant District Attorney in Tarrant County from 1967 to 1971 and as a municipal court judge from 1972 to 1974. In 1974, he was elected as judge of a Tarrant County Court at Law. From 1979 to 1983, he served as judge of the 322nd District Court in Tarrant County.
In 1983, Hill was appointed by Governor Mark White to a newly established seat on the Second Court of Appeals. In February 1993, he was elevated by Governor Ann Richards to the position of Chief Justice, and he served in this role until he left the court on December 31, 1994.
Hill authored nearly 300 opinions during his time on the court. In 1992, he was shot in the shoulder during the famous Tarrant County Courthouse shooting. A dedicated jurist, he continued to serve as a visiting justice for seventeen years after leaving his full-time judicial role.
