John Robert “Bob” McCoy (2003 to 2014)
John Robert “Bob” McCoy was born March 12, 1947, in Tyler, Texas. He completed his undergraduate studies at Texas Tech University and later earned his law degree from the University of Houston.
Before pursuing a legal career, McCoy spent nine years as an engineer. In fact, he completed his first year of law school at night while continuing to work as an engineer during the day. After earning his law degree, McCoy spent a year clerking for the Texas Supreme Court. In 1983, he joined Shannon, Gracey, Ratliff, and Miller where he would eventually become a partner. He was appointed by Governor George Bush as the judge of the 48th District Court in 1995. In 2003, he was appointed by Governor Rick Perry as a justice of the Second Court of Appeals. After eleven years as a justice, he decided to run for judge of the Tarrant County Criminal Court No. 3, a position he currently holds.
In addition to performing his judicial duties, Judge McCoy has taught as an adjunct professor at Texas A&M School of Law (formerly Texas Wesleyan School of Law) since 1999. He has received multiple awards, including the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Tarrant County Young Lawyers Association in 2013 and Chair of the Year from the Tarrant County Bar Association in 1999.
