Second Court of Appeals

Justice Place 3
Henry Oswald Head (1892 to 1895)
Henry Oswald Head was born on March 17, 1851, in Sumner County, Tennessee. He obtained his law degree from Cumberland University in 1871. Later that same year he moved to Sherman, Texas, and began practicing law in the offices of Joseph Bledsoe and Silas Hare.
He continued to practice until 1886 when he was elected judge of the 15th Judicial District Court, an office he held until 1889. He was later appointed as one of the original justices of the Second Court of Appeals by Governor James Hogg in 1892.
After serving as an appellate court justice for three years, he stepped down and returned to his private practice in Sherman. He then helped to form the firm of Head, Dillard, Maxey, Freeman, McReynolds, and Hay, where he worked for the next thirty years. Head never retired and was active in both his law practice and his community until his death on April 24, 1929. He was buried in the Sherman Mausoleum.
